Secret Lake Fishing – A Private Wilderness Day
Go where others don’t go.
Most of Lapland is seen from marked trails and busy resorts. This is what lies beyond them.
This place doesn’t appear on maps, and that is exactly why it remains untouched. Deep in the forest, at the end of a quiet forest road, lies a small wilderness lake we simply call our "Secret Lake." There are no other boats and no noise—just water, forest, and time to be present.
A Day Built Around You
We don’t rush this day. After a scenic drive from Rovaniemi, we arrive at the lake and establish our basecamp.
I’ve spent my life in these woods—from my time in the Finnish Special Forces to building my own home from timber I’ve felled myself. I’ve designed this basecamp to be simple but fail-proof. It’s a place to sit, pour coffee, dry your hands by the fire, and slow things down between casts. From here, the day unfolds naturally—moving between fishing, fire, and rest.
Fishing Waters That Still Feel Wild
The lake holds healthy populations of pike and perch. Unlike many accessible waters, these fish are not heavily pressured. You can feel the difference; strikes are often direct and unhesitating.
Whether you are a seasoned angler or have never held a rod before, this is honest, hands-on fishing. No prior experience is needed—this day is as much about the quiet connection to nature as it is about the catch. We explore the water from our stable lake boat and the untouched shoreline, ensuring everyone gets the best of both worlds.
The Rhythm of the Seasons
Every visit is slightly different, shaped by the same cycle I follow in my own life:
Early Summer: The light is endless and the forest is alive after the long winter.
Mid-Summer: The days are warm. Between fishing, we might find wild berries along the shore—first cloudberries, then blueberries.
Autumn: The air gets sharper and the colors deepen. This is my favorite time for bigger fish and a peaceful, slower rhythm.
A Proper Wilderness Basecamp
Because we are far off the grid, I come prepared with equipment I’ve tested in the harshest conditions. If the weather turns, we set up a professional heated tent with a wood-burning stove. It provides a dry, warm sanctuary to cook and rest, ensuring the Arctic elements never cut our day short.
Fire, Food, and No Hurry
At some point, we stop fishing—not because we have to, but because it feels right. We prepare an honest wilderness lunch over the open fire. This isn't "tourist food"; it’s the kind of meal I cook for myself in the woods, made with local ingredients and served with coffee brewed slowly in a traditional blackened kettle. This is a day few visitors to Lapland ever experience—and even fewer ever forget.
Optional: The Lakeside Tent Sauna
To experience the full circle of Finnish wilderness life, we can set up our mobile tent sauna by the water’s edge. Heating it, carrying the water, and waiting for the first löyly—the moment when the heat finally meets the water—is a ritual in itself. It is the ultimate way to reflect on the day before we head back to civilization.
